Three movies in the year 2011 concern Area 51 – the secret base located in the Nevada desert that has been the subject of countless alien invasion storylines.

Area 51: Confidential
Director: Brandon Slagle

First up is the low-budget indie Area 51: Confidential, which had a special screening in Oklahoma City. Area 51: Confidential is located firmly in the found footage genre of sci fi/horror, taking after The Blair Witch Project, the Paranormal Activity movies, REC, and more recently, Apollo 18. The film is directed by Brandon Slagle and stars Adrian Quihuis, Devanny Pinn (Piranha 3D, The Locals), Angie Johnson, Wolfgang Meyer and Tawny Amber Young.

Area 51: Confidential presents itself like a military training film, which is meant for new hires at the Area 51 facility. The film follows a handful of indivisuals who awaken in the desert surrounding the facility with no knowledge of how they got there, then running into strange creatures.

The film will be showing at the Sci Fi Center in Las Vegas for the Black October Art and Film Invasion. Showtime is 7pm, Friday, October 7th, 2011. The Sci Fi Center is located at 900 Karen Avenue suite D-202, Las Vegas, NV.

51
Director: Jason Connery

Yes, Sean Conner’s son Jason has starred in and directed movies. But it’s mostly crap like Wishmaster 3 and Alone in the Dark II. Now comes 51, an After Dark Films original which appeared earlier this year on the Sci Fi (whoops – “Sy Fy”) channel. 51 shows what happens when political pressure from the American public forces the Air Force to provide a few reporters with limited access to the most secretive base on the planet (that would be Area 51, folks). Pretty soon, the aliens held captive on the base decide to use the opportunity to escape.

51 stars Jason London, Rachel Miner, Bruce Boxleitner (the Tron movies, Babylon 5), Vanessa Branch, and John Shea. It is now available on DVD.

Area 51
Director: Oren Peli

Oren Peli was last seen directing the first Paranormal Activity film. Now he’s back for a second go at directing duties with Area 51, due out in theaters in March of 2012 (if IMDB is to be believed). Currently in post-production, Area 51 will also follow the found-footage narrative structure and involves three teens who end up at Area 51. Not much else is known at this time except for the fact that the budget is low (about $5 million) and that it stars Sandra Staggs.

Rumor has it that the script goes something like this:

A group of young people (who are into aliens and all that) go to Vegas and meet a former Area 51 employee who thinks the government is performing human/alien experiments in exchange for alien technology. The group plan on getting onto the base and getting past all the security (“Sneakers”-style). Then they meet aliens… Geek Tyrant suggests that the script reads like Paranormal Activity.. with aliens.

Here’s where it gets interesting. Apparently, Peli shot Area 51 2 years ago! Paramount has been sitting on it until this year, when it demanded massive re-shoots. Hopefully we’ll see it in 2012. (source: Adamantium Bullet
