Other Cool Stuff

Curse of Chucky (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet)

Chucky (voiced by Brad Dourif) is back in this 6th installment! When a mysterious package arrives at the house of Nica (Fiona Dourif, Brad’s daughter), she doesn’t give it much thought. However, after her mother’s mysterious death, Nica begins to suspect that the talking, red-haired doll her visiting niece has been playing with may be the key to the ensuing bloodshed and chaos. Unrated version.

The Uninvited (Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

This old-school ghost story gets the Criterion treatment. A pair of siblings (Ray Milland and Ruth Hussey) purchase a surprisingly affordable, lonely cliff-top house in Cornwall, only to discover that it actually carries a ghostly price; soon they’re caught up in a bizarre romantic triangle from beyond the grave. Rich in atmosphere, The Uninvited was groundbreaking for the seriousness with which it treated the haunted-house genre, and it remains an elegant and eerie experience. This release features: a new 2K digital film restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack; a new visual essay by filmmaker Michael Almereyda; booklet featuring an essay by critic Farran Smith Nehm.

The Purge (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet)

In the near future, society is peaceful and crime-free, except for one night every year where the government says “anything goes” including murder. On the night of “The Purge”, Ethan Hawke and his family secure the house. But after his son takes pity on a victim and lets him inside the home, all hell breaks loose… The Purge was surprisingly successful this year, and now you can check it out for yourself.

Friday the 13th: The Complete Collection [Blu-ray]

Every single Friday the 13th film on Blu-ray, including F vs J and the remake. Also included: DVD bonus disc full of special features on the making of the franchise, collectible tin case with 11 hours of previously released special features and a 40-page soft cover book, excerpted from Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History Of Friday The 13th. Tons of other extras. There’s even a “Camp Crystal Lake” patch.

Psycho II (Collector’s Edition) [Blu-ray]

Anthony Perkins returns in his most famous role. Psycho II came out in 1983, over 22 years after the original, and was a success. This one even brings back Vera Miles. Extras: new Audio Commentary with Screenwriter Tom Holland, interviews with cast and crew including Anthony Perkins and director Richard Franklin, TV spots, trailer. Another nice release from Shout! Factory.

Psycho III (Collector’s Edition) [Blu-ray]

Shout! Factory also gives us Psycho III (1986), which was directed by Perkins himself! Another surprisingly decent sequel that finds Perkins paying tribute to Hitch while also dealing with the plot developments in the second film. Extras: New Audio Commentary with Screenwriter Charles Edward Pogue, interviews with Jeff Fahey and Katt Shea, interview with Special Make-Up Effects Creator Michael Westmore, Body Double: interview with Brinke Stevens, original trailer.
