According to Clive Barker’s Facebook page, the horror author has been tasked by Bob Weinstein and Dimension Films to write the script to the Hellraiser remake. Barker, whose horror novel The Hellbound Heart formed the basis for the original Hellraiser film, had this to say:
The idea of my coming back to the original film and telling the story with a fresh intensity-honoring the structure and the designs from the first incarnation but hopefully creating an even darker and richer film-was attractive to Dimension.
Barker goes on to say that CGI will be minimal; the film will focus more on practical make-up effects. He also said that everybody involved in the project agrees that Doug Bradley should be brought back to play Pinhead. The film will be R-rated and Barker plans to start writing as soon as all legal papers are signed.
Previously, Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer were attached to the reboot, but in 2011 they confirmed that they were no longer involved. The last Hellraiser film was the poorly received Hellraiser: Revelations, which currently is the only Hellraiser film not to feature Doug Bradley. That ninth installment was most likely an attempt to buy time for a proper remake, ensuring that the Weinsteins wouldn’t lose the franchise rights.
