The True Story of the Black Dahlia

Many of the characters and plot points were inspired by actual theories relating to the death of Elizabeth Short, also known as the Black Dahlia. Elizabeth Short’s body was found mutilated in Leimert Park, Los Angeles on January 15, 1947. Her body was discovered cut in half at the waist. To this day, the murder is unsolved. Short’s murder has inspired the books Severed: The True Story of the Black Dahlia Murder by John Gilmore, Black Dahlia Avenger: The True Story by Steve Hodel, and The Black Dahlia by James Ellroy. Ellroy’s book inspired the film The Black Dahlia directed by Brian De Palma and starring Josh Hartnett, Scarlett Johansson, Aaron Eckhart, Hilary Swank, and Mia Kirshner.
